Gregory of Nin (Croatian: Grgur Ninski ) was a medieval Croatian bishop of Nin who strongly opposed the Pope and official circles of the Church and introduced the national language in the religious services after the Great Assembly in 926, according to traditional Croatian historiography.
A great statue to the bishop Gregory of Nin was built by the famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrović. Gregory’s big toe is brighter than the rest of the statue as there is a belief connected to it – it is believed that it fulfils wishes and brings happiness to all those who touch it.
